The sub-divisional officer of Ngoro, in Cameroon’s Centre region, has tightened controls on river crossings after a deadly boat accident on the Mbam River, where overloading and unsafe conditions are common.
In a decree issued on April 13, 2026, Brice Charly Meke Olinga limited motorized pirogues to six passengers and made life jackets mandatory. Crossings are now banned after 6 p.m. unless special permission is granted by local authorities.
The move comes after a pirogue capsized on April 12 while carrying nine people returning from a traditional marriage ceremony. At least four people died, according to Cameroon Tribune.
The accident highlights ongoing challenges with river transport in this rural area about 160 km north of Yaoundé, where many residents rely on small boats despite unsafe conditions.
Overloading, lack of safety equipment and unsafe navigation continue to increase the risk of accidents on the river.
The sub-divisional officer warned that offenders will face penalties under existing regulations. Local authorities, including the mayor, the gendarmerie and traditional leaders, have been tasked with enforcing the measures.
